Introduction

The RSSEM Lab, directed by Prof. Yuhong He in the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment at the University of Toronto, Mississauga Campus, develops and applies geospatial artificial intelligence, Earth observation and ecosystem modelling to understand, monitor and predict environmental change. We integrate satellite, drone, field and laboratory data to study grasslands, wetlands, forests, farmland and urban green spaces across scales.

A central focus of our research is translating technological innovation into societal impact: better ecosystem monitoring, sustainable land management, and evidence for policy on climate change, food security and urban resilience.

Our research is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Ontario Research Fund (ORF), the Ontario Early Researcher Award (ERA), the National Capital Commission, Natural Resources Canada, and many other funding programs.

We work with government agencies, conservation authorities, industry and researchers in Canada and abroad. Please contact us if you are interested in working with us.

Key research themes

  • AI-enhanced remote sensing systems for high-resolution ecosystem mapping and monitoring
  • Multi-source data integration and spatiotemporal gap-filling, combining satellite, UAV, and ground-based observations
  • Ecosystem responses to climate variability, disturbance, and human activity, with applications in conservation, agriculture, and urban environments
